Hearing screening for children

Early detection of hearing loss is the foundation of a child’s healthy development. Hearing screening is a mandatory, safe and painless test for children from birth to 6 years. It takes only 5–10 minutes.

Newborn stage

Performed in the maternity hospital within the first 24–72 hours of life (for premature babies and after intensive care — on days 7–14).

2

Polyclinic stage

Performed at the polyclinic, in the child development room, at ages set by the Ministry of Health:

  1. 3 mo
  2. 1 yr
  3. 2 yrs
  4. 3 yrs
  5. 6 yrs

OAE — otoacoustic emissions

A soft probe is placed in the ear, the device plays a quiet sound, the inner ear (cochlea) responds and the response is recorded.

ABR — auditory brainstem response

An objective method for assessing the auditory pathways and brainstem. Especially important for premature babies and those who were on a ventilator.
